Dealing with the Pandemic

The Beginning

The World Health Organization on 31 December 2019 provided information on pneumonia of unknown cause in the Chinese city of Wuhan by the Chinese national authorities, but in this case a virus called coronavirus was discovered. Temporarily named “2019-nCoV”. The coronaviruses (CoVs) are a large family of viruses that commonly cause diseases ranging from winter to summer. The novel coronavirus is a new strain that has not previously been identified in humans. In the first week of 2020, this virus was named covid-19 virus.

On 30 January 2020, the World Health Organization declared this coronavirus a ‘Public Health Emergency of International Concern’ (PHEIC), a time when there were 98 coronavirus cases and no deaths in 18 other countries outside China. Since March 2020, the number of cases outside China began to increase rapidly and the WHO described the outbreak as a pandemic. After which more than 118000 cases of this virus were reported in 114 countries and about 4291 people had died. At this time this epidemic was spreading mostly in Europe. As of April 2020, the global death rate from the virus was 63% from Europe.

Animal Connection

Research into the natural reservoir of the virus that caused the 2002–2004 SARS outbreak has resulted in the discovery of many SARS-like bat coronaviruses, most originating in horseshoe bats. Bats are considered the most likely natural reservoir of SARS-CoV-2. Differences between the bat coronavirus and SARS-CoV-2 suggest that humans may have been infected via an intermediate host; although the source of introduction into humans remains unknown.
